The film and video production industry in New Mexico continues to grow — just ask some of the local studios. The 20 New Mexico companies on our Film and Video Production Companies List have worked on some pretty cool projects.
From big-screen productions like “Independence Day: Resurgence” and small-screen shows like “Better Call Saul” to local projects for businesses and television, New Mexican film companies are finding new ways to show off the Land of Enchantment. The film industry brought a record $288 million into the state economy in fiscal year 2015, according to a report from the New Mexico Film Office.
“Though the opportunities may be fewer in a market like Albuquerque, if you keep creating work you believe in, those opportunities will come,” Ryan Turri, owner of Turri Productions, said. Turri is the director of the film “Abe Makes A Movie.”
As Luca Ceccarelli, owner of HDNM Entertainment LLC, points out, the industry in New Mexico is very different from other major film hubs, such as Los Angeles and New York City. Ceccarelli has worked on films such as “Paradox Lost” and “Eve Angelic.”
“Development funds and film financing are consistently the highest challenge, especially for emerging filmmakers and original content producers,” Ceccarelli said. “Given the speculative nature of the investment, it is challenging to find resources to develop native projects, whereas in other markets, like Los Angeles and New York, investors are often more willing to take that risk.”
Even so, many people we surveyed for our List have a positive view of the market. On a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being poor and 5 being great, the average response was a 3.5 while nearly 20 percent gave the industry a 5.
