Examiner: Albuquerque Studios used in 2 major films to open in US theaters Sept. 18, 2015
“Sicario” & “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” were both filmed inside the Albuquerque Studios at Albuquerque, NM. Both movies will open in U.S. theaters on Sept. 18, 2015. “Sicario” began shooting from June to August 2014 in Las Lunas, Corrales, Laguna Pueblo, Albuquerque plus Bernalillio & Sandoval counties. “The Scorch Trials” began shooting in & around Albuquerque from October 2014 to January 2015. The two films employed 450 New Mexico crew members & over 2,800 background extra talent.
“Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” opened at the Foreign box office on Sept. 11, 2015. The 21 city markets brought in an estimated $26.7 million. It will open in 41 additional Foreign markets along with the U.S. bow on Sept. 18. This is the first sequel to the surprise box office hit called, “The Maze Runner.” The second sequel is in pre-production which is called “Maze Runner: The Death Cure.” The trilogy of science fiction books was written by James Dashner. “Death Cure” is scheduled for release in 2017.
“Sicario” will open only in select theaters across the United States on Sept. 18. It will open into wide release on Oct. 2.
According to the press release from Albuquerque Studios, “Sicario – a searing emotional thriller that descends into the intrigue, corruption and moral mayhem of the borderland drug wars, starring Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin, used locations throughout Albuquerque, NM as Juarez, Mexico, including a tense scene at the U.S.-Mexico border that was actually filmed on the backlot of ABQ Studios.”
“American dystopian science-fiction film, ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,’ filmed extensively on the stages at Albuquerque Studios, where the sets were made to look like the post-apocalyptic future. ‘The Scorch Trials’ is being released by 20th Century Fox and stars Dylan O’Brien, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Ki Hong and was directed by Wes Ball.”
